PERSONALITY

mithrun has been described as 'unsettling', especially upon first meeting him. a first impression might tell you precious little, other than the fact that he appears... detached. there is a chilliness to him, a distance. it's not a malicious coldness; he is simply disinterested.
in everything.
except...mithrun's desires were eaten by a demon, though he didn't perish.
there was one thing that drove him forward, in the absence of all
desire or wanting: revenge against the demon.it is this one remaining desire that drives him, even when his very desire to live has been devoured. he returned to the canaries, now as a captain - and he is a very capable leader: a talented magic user, extremely shrewd and at times, cunning. he's very blunt when speaking, but can be equally authoritative — and he is respected by his squad, mostly.
morality is of little consequence to Mithrun overall, though he is not to be mistaken for a villain. his goal is to eradicate the demon, not only for his own sake but for all - and he acts solely in the interest of making that happen. he is the definition of a true neutral.his overall apathy in the face of anything other than his mission, and his need to rely on other people to ensure that his basic needs are met, can make mithrun appear uncharacteristically biddable.
his squadmate (and subordinate) cithis, when tasked with caring for his basic needs, took advantage so that she could amuse herself, ordering the captain into a dress ( among other things ) and mithrun followed all of her instructions without question. until she ordered him to kill another squadmate. this was the first time he refused, explaining,
"if I did that, I wouldn't be able to stay in the squad any longer."
mithrun tends to act on the path of least resistance. he has no reason to protest - there exists no desire to save face or to care for his appearance.
so he can come off as submissive, obediently taking orders even from subordinates - solely because he has no reason to decline.mithrun is not a man completely detached, of course. when someone knows how to read him ( which is certainly not the easiest task ), they'll find that he does have feelings, does care — it is all just expressed, and felt within himself, in a very unique way.
he's not a shell of a man in every sense, though certainly some. detached from his feelings he may be, but they still exist, for better or for worse.

BACKSTORY

I drew this up for anyone that isn’t familiar with Dungeon Meshi and so wouldn’t know much of Mithrun’s story. Obviously, spoilers ahead !!Mithrun was born into the House of Kerensil, a noble and distinguished family of investors based in the Northern Central Continent. He had an older brother, who was frail and ‘not very bright’, as well as lacking their tribe’s distinguishing features: silver eyes and hair. His parents ignored his brother, and people would whisper that he was an illegitimate son. Mithrun described him as being “less than me in every way” — and yet it was Mithrun who was sent to join the Canaries, in his brother’s place.The Canaries were a task force whose mission it was to investigate and take control of dungeons that have surpassed a certain level of danger. It was primarily made up of prisoners, while the remainder are children of nobility who are drafted into the Canaries as a show of loyalty to their country. They act as guards for the prisoners. Mithrun’s role was as a researcher.On the surface, he appeared to be what a perfect elf should be: pristine silver eyes, perfectly long and pointed ears, and a winning personality. He was wonderfully friendly and very popular, very well-liked. But in reality, Mithrun was a vain and insecure individual who looked down on everyone else. Teammates, friends, prisoners — and especially his older brother, who he hated with a passion. Not solely because he was angry that he was made to join the Canaries in his lesser brother’s stead, but because despite the assumption being that his brother was illegitimate — it was Mithrun who was born of a scandalous affair. His beautiful eyes and ears, the things that made him superior, were the proof.Eventually, he and his squad of Canaries went to investigate a dungeon. There, he found a magic mirror, which would show people their deepest desires to lure them in. He saw a vision of his brother, lesser than him in every sense, sharing a meal with the woman Mithrun loved but could not pursue as a result of his deployment to the Canaries. Furious, he smashed the mirror, and a small goat emerged. The goat offered him a chance to live the life he missed out on — a life where he never joined the Canaries — and Mithrun accepted. He became the Lord of the Dungeon, and the goat would give him everything he desired.At first life was amazing and peaceful, friends and loved ones in a village that reminded him of his home. But then problems began to creep in, slowly: monsters, thieves… With every wish or desire Mithrun had, the goat grew stronger, and his loved ones slowly disappeared. Eventually, he began to lose his vitality. While he lay in bed, weak, the goat appeared now as a huge and terrifying entity — a demon. The demon ate almost all of Mithrun’s desires, and he took the things that made Mithrun ‘perfect’: his right eye, a perfect silver, and the tips of his ears.Mithrun was found by a group of Canaries, mutilated and on the verge of death. They were going to mercy kill him, as even his desire to live had been taken from him— without that, he wouldn’t last long. But then they heard him mumbling that he would fucking kill it — proof that one desire remained: the desire for revenge.“And from that point onward, Mithrun lived only to slay demons. He ate, even though he had no desire to eat. He lived, even though he had no desire to live.”Mithrun was on the verge of death for many years. During this time, a dungeon reached a critical point of danger and a massive tragedy came of it: Utaya. Monsters destroyed the town, killing the inhabitants and many Canary soldiers who had been sent in. This tragedy was what made Mithrun decide to actually work towards rehabilitation, as he knew that if he had been there, the demon might have been stopped. He resolved to return to active duty and, when that time came much later, he was appointed captain immediately as so many had perished in Utaya and they were so short on personnel.This leads us to canon, where Mithrun leads a squad as the captain of the Canaries. He is a man without desire, and very different to who he was as a youth. He is largely unable to care for himself, and requires a ‘caretaker’ when in the dungeon — he cannot recognise his own basic needs, and lacks the desire to eat, or sleep, or do anything that does not lead him towards the demon.
